Millions to refugee accommodations where no refugees are staying is the most outrageous tax waste of the year in Sweden. The empty refugee accommodations is the 2018 winner of the Swedish Taxpayers’ Association’s annual “Tax Waste of the Year” contest with a record-breaking 17 000 votes cast. The city of Gothenburg’s 236 Communication Officers came in second, and the world’s longest ski tunnel under a mountain in the tiny town of Bräcke was voted the third most jaw-dropping waste of public money. Ten nominees were selected from the examples that the association’s Ombudsman for tax waste, Slöseriombudsmannen, exposed to its more than 100 000 social media followers on a daily basis.
